Following are some amazing skin facts. Your skin is your largest organ and your second most complex organ next to your brain. Within a square centimeter there are 6 million cells, 5,000 sense -end organs, 200 pain sensors, 156 inches of nerve fibers, 39 inches of blood vessels, a 100 sweat glands and 15 sebaceous glands. This is a complex network of communication and it keeps us alive! Through our skin’s network of neural communication, we send messages back and forth to the brain. Simply put - if your messages to the nerve endings and pain sensors in the skin through your touch and skin care products are of drying, burning, rubbing, and scrubbing, you are sending messages of stress to your brain. in response, the brain will direct the functions of your skin to protect you. Physical and chemical Messages of stress on the skin= increased blood flow = increased redness. Increased sebum production = enlarged pores. Increased buildup of tough layers of skin = trapped sebum in pores. Breakdown of natural barrier = loss of moisture and elasticity. If we run, our heart pumps. If we lift weight, we gain muscle ---- the brain gets the message and the body reacts. If we wear sandals all summer, we get callous on our feet - nobody is surprised. The skin is not different. It is the frontline against invasion to your body - and therefore is designed to react to what you do to it. If you stroke your skin as light as a feather, your skin’s functions relax. If you rub, dry, burn, and create friction, your body goes into defense. If you want your skin to look like silk, feel like silk, and glow; then the message through your touch and products must be of gentleness and hydration, not of stress. As you change these factors, the skin will self correct - like any other wound. I know it sounds so incredibly simple - but it is science. By understanding and respecting the skin’s functions and properties, you can change the condition of your skin. That is the gift of this entire awareness. Your skin WILL CHANGE!
